Fourcross or mountaincross. It's a short downhill elimination race with four riders at a time on a
course with big jumps and berms.

    What's the context?

    I think there's a thickness of fly fishing leader that's referred to as 4X. I think there's
something in the world of optics that might be called 4X.

If it's terminology from bikes and cycling, it's *probably* "4 cross" which is a way to lace up a
wheel, where the spokes cross each other 4 times (2 cross and 3 cross being more common).

And, uh, why did you post this as a reply to a 2-year-old thread rather than starting a new one? (I
    know, dumb question)

I think it fits under the heading "dumb question" quite well. Recycling and all that.
