    Well well... [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG]

    After chatting so much ^%^@& about fatigue and aluminium I was finally right! [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG]

    I just went for a small ride to the park and was having some coffee and examining the bike in the sunlight after reading that cracked components thread.

    The fork has a hairline crack across on the left side and 2 hairline cracks on the right side, one in the front and one in the back of the fork blade. They both run in the inside of the fork too.

    The headtube also has a hairline crack in the left side.

    It looks pretty obvious that these are cracks and not scratches, as the paint is not removed at all. It's cracked.

    The bike was never in a serious accident, it has 5000km on the "meter" and was never used for racing. It's a 2013 A1 Allez with Alu fork.

    So they are giving me a free S-works SL4 now, right? [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG]

    Anybody with experience on Specialized warranty claims?

    Anybody with the same frame?

    They have a good rep for warranty service. If you ask nicely, maybe they'll send you a carbon fork. :big-smile:

    Wash the frame and forks and make it look pristine. Call Specialized and ask what you need to do to process the claim. If they say take it too an authorized dealer then do so - but if you have a choice try and go for one that offers a ton of Specialized products rather that just a mom and pop place. If there's a Specialized Concept store near you, take it there.

    It's where I got the bike too... Anyway it's pretty obvious that this isnt crash related. Yep, will clean before it for sure. I might get a marker and circle the cracks too.

    Clean it and leave it... Don't mark it or do anything weird and wonderful too it.

    I have no idea where you're from. I thought you were shacking up with Campybob in a little known town called Buttf*ck, IN.

    Are you sure that's not a carbon fork with aluminum steerer?

    Nevermind. The A1 did come with a full alloy fork/crown/steerer. Weird, that looks more like a bonded joint failing on a straight line than a welded joint tearing in the heat affected zone. Is the fork of bonded construction at the crown to blade interface?

    Should not be carbon according to the specs, unless I got a "rare deal" or something. (Which I totally didn't.) [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG]

    Actually it's not that straight.

    One side has only cracks on the front and the back (the double box pic) and the one with the whole side crack is not straight at all. (The cracks from back and forth make a yin-yang kinda thing between them. [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG])

    It could be just the paint over "some kind" of weld but:

    I dont think that there is a weld joint there, not even a flat one... It looks like the whole fork is one piece that was formed into a fork with the steerer being welded, or whatever, on it.

    Anyway, the damn thing makes some creaking sounds when there is weight on the top tube and the handlebar turns so... Back to the shop it goes.

    I know Specialized also used forks with aluminum steerers and crowns, BUT with bonded on carbon fiber blades for some of the lower line Allez models.

    You can pretty easily tell carbon from aluminum just with a snap of a fingernail to the blade. The sound and feel differs according to the material.
