  1. I just put an SRM on my road bike and did a hard solo ride with a lot of climbs. I was well rested and feeling good. My avg watts for the best 60m was 274 but my NP was 301 (WKO+).

I abhor time trials and in general really suck at them so I'm pretty hesitant to do an FTP test. Besides I don't think I could even do a decent long effort at the moment.

If I put my ftp at 301 for zone training and WKO purposes, would that be near enough in the neighborhood to get things done or would 274 be more accurate? I'll probably get all geed up and do a proper test later on in the winter after I get some training in (I just started riding again a few weeks ago after a 7 year layoff).

    Thanks.

Yes, for training purposes, because it will be self-correcting. If your high-intensity efforts keyed to 301 are too hard, you'll know. Likewise, if your high-intensity efforts are too easy, you'll know. NP is a better estimate than your AP for a variable power ride.

  3. Makes sense.

Yeah, those downhills seem impossible to keep the power up, especially steep ones. I see how the NP could be a more valuable number for that.

    Thanks for the help.
