Ah, just me whining again. Had a golden opportunity to get in a long ride this morning, as I had a late-morning doctor 's appt. Got all of my gear around last night, set out my clothes. Got up at 4:00, put the dog out, noticed it was freezing cold, so I checked NWS - 37 with a windchill of 26. So, being the total wuss that I am, I wimped out and decided to go back to bed for a couple of hours and then hit the pool at my gym. The warm fitness pool, not the colder lap pool. It sounded like a great plan, until I hit the water only to find it as cold as the lap pool, seems the heater was off part of the night last night. Brrrr. Lesson learned, just layer up and get on the frickin' bike. What is wuss boy here gonna do all winter if he can't stand 37 degrees, LOL?

I had the same problem when I was swimming at the YMCA. Sometimes the water would be a bit colder. But as soon as I was in the pool and started swimming I didnt mind...
Yeah the bike is much more convinient... I have 2 swimming pools in my proximity, one being 50m and the other one (the YMCA one) is 25m long. They are both great for working out, but the whole process of going there, changing clothes there, having a shower and then the whole thing again reversed with the work out in between is kinda boring so I stopped going there. With the bike you start from home and you end at home and you have your work out.
Did you consider jogging? Its much more convinient then both cycling and swimming but its a bit more boring then both I think...
But the best work out is probably swimming... Its fun too, but I think cycling is the most fun of all three...

Jogging, hell no! I am running. I broke the 5k barrier about 4 weeks ago, trying to break the 10k barrier before Mid November and I ultimately want to be able to do 8-10 miles at least on a consistent basis. Ok, technically my average speed is well below the 6.0 mph threshold to be considered running. It is jogging at this time. I can sustain 6.0 to about 6.8 mph for maybe 4-5 minutes max, with my heart rate way over AT, into zone 5. Then I have to drop back down to somewhere in the 4.5 to 5.3 range for a 6-10 minute recovery. I am signed up for my first official 5k on 01/01/14 at Comerica Park in Detroit. It 's a "fun run" not a competition. Now, here is the really weird part. The 48 year old dude with some pretty significant medical issues (uh, physical and otherwise ;-) ) who was 60 lbs overweight in Aug of 2012, who was abusing his body big time with refined carbs, unhealthy fats, junk food is ... signed up for intro triathlon training in Jan 2014. As long as it happens, the gym has to have a minimum of 8 people sign up, they have met that the past several years I am told, so with luck.... Swimming, I'm working on it, it is my weakest area by far. I'm actually really satisfied with my progress in running. Cycling, well, I hope in the bag, but having never been on a road bike in my life, I know it will be a re-education. The manager at LBS said I would get the best deals on a road bike next March, so that purchase will probably wait. Being Michigan, the cycling training of the tri program will be strictly indoors on the spin cycles until end of March.

Triathlon? Hmmm sounds exhausting lololol
Swimming isnt that hard... When I first started I was doing 25m laps and stopping for a minute then another 25 and was totalling 700m each day when I was going.
After a while I started doing 50m laps and then again totalling 700m per day.
After a while later I could do the whole 700m in one go...The key for me is that I was feeling comfortable having a steady pace on a repetitive motion, I read a bit online on how to have a good effective movement (stroke I think they call it) to swimm efficiently and kept with it without thinking much for 700m.
The problem with me is pushing harder. I can push a little harder for a while but then I have to drop back to normal pace (or even less then normal) for a while to get my breath back. I can make some "crazy" super efforts but those are usually very short before I get exhausted and have to reduce the pace or even stop for a bit to get my breath back. But I am not into special nutrition or anything sporty like that. I just try to eat freshly cooked food but I have a -very- weak spot for beer... and heavy metal music... and girls... Beer being the most successful obsession of the three so far...
I didnt go for assisted training at the YMCA it was 60euro per month instead of of 30euro for just using the pool, but sometimes the coach was there doing the assisted training ones and I was hearing what she was telling them... The YMCA does indeed have a "competition" team in swimming here but the sessions I watched there were just fitness sessions so they were not stressing the hell out of youngsters like in the competition training.
I had less luck with the local cycling team though were they seemed to be very keen on races...
Btw if you are on the look for a road bike and you like Specialized (you got a hybrid one allready huh?) You can check at your LBS, they made an early release of the 2014 models. I suspect that the 2013 ones are allready gonna be on offers and maybe you can flip your hybrid on the deal too to get an even better discount...
I have the opposite problem now... I flipped my commuter and now I am stuck with just a road bike and dont have a commuter for shopping...

Thanks, Volnix. My Hybrid, however, will have to be pried from my cold dead hands. I am nuts about that bike ( and as you may know if you recall my last post from a Dodge City shootout thread a few months back, nuts in general, but the harmless, good but a little pathetic kind of nuts, I work at moving past that. :big-smile🙂. I absolutely love the bike, I talk to "him" and tell him we're riding now, buddy, let's kick it. At least the bike does not answer me back.:sarcasm:
