Been a long time since i've been on a bicycle. Decided recently to start cycling, so looking to get some knowledge from you fellow forum members. Walked into a bicycle shop the other day and woah i didn't even understand what i was looking at lol. The technology is insane nowadays. Of course the salesman wanted to sell me the most expensive bicycle they had available. So wanted to do some research before i dip in that world.
Well anyways, just wanted to introduce myself. Hope to learn a whole lot from you all.
It's the same [censored], just some different terminology and a bit more pricey. How serious are you about getting back into cycling? What's your price range (don't forget the accessories)? Definitely make sure to get properly fitted for a bike. If that salesman tried to sell you the most expensive bike, then it's time to go to another bike shop.
well im definitely very serious about getting back into cycling as a teen i did a lot of mountain biking. Now it seems like i'm leaning more towards the road/cross bikes. I live in an area where there are a lot of great roads to ride on, and like i said i really want to get back in shape, i played football all my life (6"3 240lbs i do a lot of weight lifting) but for cardio nothing beats a bike to me.
Seems like for a budget i'm somewhere around 400-600 (without including accessories). Fitment was another thing that baffled me the salesman told me i'd be fine on a 52-54cm frame bike (hope i got that right).
I'm not really technical on the geometry of a bike and I won't say he's right or wrong, but I am 5' 7" and I am on a 52cm bike fitted for me. I'd think that you would be crunched and hunched on that size bike at 6' 3" that's why you should be sized properly. There are tutorials on the web about how to size yourself for a bike. At least that way, you'd have an idea. Also, check around here to see what size bikes folks have at your height. Me personally, I'd be a little sceptical of his suggested eye ball sizing though.
Your budget seems a bit low if your seriously thinking about getting into road cycling, think of it as a 10 year investment. Go to a good local bike shop, get fitted, expect to spend $800-$900 for a bike. I have a Trek 1.2 and couldn't be more happy with it, it's considered a beginner bike. good luck!
