IIRC,Stephen Pinker discusses the subject in "How the Mind Works", with references for

V.S. Ramachandran also addresses this in Phantoms in the Brain. He suggests that it evolved as a
signal when a perceived threat turned out to be trivial. That's what makes something humorous:
the punchline is more trivial than the expected outcome of an otherwise serious (or mundane)
plot line.

The reason for laughter and humour having evolved is a fundamental opportunity (for individuals) to
cope with life-situationally concurrent and past adversities (that causes neuropsychophysiological
tension) in an tension releasing (relatively safely and enjoyably - and even socially 'cementingly'
and conflict 'preventingly' - so) way.
evolutionary opportunity; and the potential for doing/having "it" is THE most basic "opportunity-
type evolutionary pressure" that I can think of.)

This is my own so it's highly tentative hypothesis. But you use the same facial muscles to smile as
to chew and eat - and vice versa the same muscles to frown as to block out food or spit it out. It's
conceivable that these are food signals IMO
