I have *no* idea where I read this; maybe someone will recognize it. Google only knows about it
because I mentioned it twice in March of 2000.
A species which, for lack of a better name, I call the Genetics Lab Moth.
The niche which this moth occupies is (obviously) genetics labs - specifically, those genetics labs
which breed fruit flies.
Graduate students are assigned to feed the fruit flies and to clean non-drosophilia eggs from the
rotting apple peels. There is thus selective pressure to have eggs (and larvae) that resemble those
of drosophilia, and thus (as I understand it) the Genetics Lab Moth has developed excellent mimicry
in this tiny domain.
Sound familiar to anyone?
