1. Hello all, new guy here. My name is Lou. I used to ride my mountain bike quite a bit a while back but got away from it due to work and no time. All that has changed now that I lost my job. I have let myself get out of shape and am looking towards my bike to get back into it. I currently have my old Marin 18 speed mountain bike. It needs a little work (brakes, skipping gears) but for now until I can get something better it will do. What I need in the immediate future however is a powerful headlight. I used to have Cat Eyes headlamp and really liked it but misplaced my charger. I do a lot of night riding in areas of no light so I need a powerful one. What's good? I did a search but did not see what I needed. I kinda liked the Cat Eye but if there is something better let me know, maybe LED's? Also for tooling around town I kinda miss my old 3 speed English racer (with rear coaster brake) so maybe some recommendations there. I've been out of the loop for a while. Thanks in advance for any help, Lou.

  2. For road riding, even night time commuting I really like the NightRider Lumina series, either the 500 or 650. I run the 500 and rarely need the highest power setting. It's small and recharges off any USB style charger or even cable from a computer port.

For serious off road riding I'd go for a more powerful light but if you'll be on pavement, even totally dark unlit pavement the Lumina 500 or 650 are both very good options.

  3. Lou,

There is a regional player over here that makes a line of lights named the Perineum. It comes in three models (could be wrong here, but I think the 100, 200, 500). My boyfriend Steve started using them and raves about the quality.

Shoot me a PM as they are not commercial, but we have ties to the manufacturer....who nonetheless will be heard from in the near future.

But I do have to agree with Davy boy up above...the Lumina has been a favorite of mine in the past.

    Best,

    DaBullet

  4. I use Ay Up lights and dig them quite a lot. They're produced in Australia, but ship to the US. Their lights are bright and don't exact a wallet crippling price.

  5. Thanks for the ideas gentlemen. I will do some research.

    Uh...yep....

    Here's a rigged setup Lou.

  7. If you just need a powerful enough light for speeds like 20km/h a battery including unit that says something like "1 watt" or "3 watts" should be good. If you need some "landing lights" for some very high speeds or for when riding in trails in the complete darkness you might need a unit with a separate battery unit and lights.

There are too many variables in lights, some are measured in candlelights, some are measured in lumens, then there is the battery voltage disharge curve, the units weight (charged - uncharged) then there are the optics, the quality of the leds, the battery type... too many.

I would suggest a light from giant which has an 1watt cree led or a 3watt cree led. They are small and only use 3 aaa batteries. You can get some good rechargables with a flat discharge curve which will only give 1.2v output instead of the 1.5v the single use ones use. But after a bit of use the voltage drops in most batteries, so you might get even more light from the 1.2v rechargable ones. I would suggest ther re-cyko batteries from GP or the eneloop ones from sanyo? I think...

Some other good lights which operate with an internal battery unit are the "lezyne" ones. They seem very well built, with aluminium housing and I would think that the led quality is similar. Some are sold with rechargable batteries.

    Good luck.

  8. A few lights compared...see them in a night scene with distances labeled and over-the-handlebar view:

  9. I found my charger!

  10. PETZL makes some good headlamps...
