My girlfriend has been in hospital for the past two weeks and was released yesterday. It all started
2 weeks ago today when she went to bed and complained of pain and tingling in her left arm, she was
in agony throughout the night and we eventually had to call out the doctor, who didn't have a clue
and immediately referred her to the hospital. Once in the hospital, she spent 2 days in the
assessment ward, whilst they decided what to do with her. All we could think of was that it was a
trapped nerve somewhere. While on this ward, she had a ct scan and an x-ray of her upper body, both
of which came back as being normal. She suffered through severe pain during these few days and even
had to have an epidural to ease the pain, which seemed to have also spread to her right arm as well.
Eventually a neurologist came and did various reflex tests and the like and referred her up to the
neurology ward, where she spent the rest of her stay.
Another doctor saw her once she got on to the neurology ward and he booked her in for an MRI and
a lumbar puncture. After having the mri and going through intense pain for the lumbar puncture,
the results once again came back as being normal and we were once again left very puzzled. As the
time went on, her arm wasn't getting any better, the right arm was almost back to normal apart
from not being able to straighten it, and the left arm was just left limp and she can only just
move her fingers.
The doctor then came back and said they thought it was a vitamin b12 defiency and if that was the
case they would give her several injections of b12. This never materialised and was soon
forgotten about.
During the last few days, she has once again had more tests, this time they were some sort of
electro nerve tests, were she was pricked several times in both arms. The day after she had these
tests (yesterday), they told her that they thought it was a virus causing damage to her nerves,
which they said would sort itself over time! No indication of how long! So she's now home with
various pain killers and is pretty much the same as when she first went into hospital.
One thing I forgot to mention, we had been on a 2 week holiday to Zante and arrived home a week
before she went in to hospital. Whilst on holiday she had several run-ins with mosquito's and was
bitten at least a dozen times. Not sure if this has any link, just thought I'd point it out.
Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this and whether anything can be done about it,
we've been told physio is out of the question and could make things worse, but we've not ruled out
using natural remedies to try and fix this problem.
Much appreciated.
