Downhill burst

  1. Hi, I have a bought a second hand racing bike off ebay and it has worked well, accept for one problem. When I go down a long hill near me, I have had two large blowouts near the bottom of the hill. I am only inflating the tire to 85 psi (which is the limit maximum). This may be the problem, however on the 6 mile each way return journey the tire has burst within 50 yards, both time the front tire.
    No visible marks can be seen on the outside of the tire.

    Before buying a new inner tube, I was wondering if it is due to cheap inner tubes, or over-inflation?

  2. Punctures are usually due to running over something sharp in the road, or a spoke poking through the tube from the inside of the rim. If you examine the tube closely, you should be able to find the hole. If the puncture repeats, it's often due to a fine shard of glass or wire sticking in the tire. These can be hard to see, so most experienced cyclists will spend some time carefully running their fingers inside a tire after a flat. The goal is to find that tiny sliver before installing the new tube and flatting again a few miles down the road.

    If the puncture is on the inside of the tube, that would be caused by a spoke end poking through the rim tape and into the tube. You should be able to detect that by checking the rim tape bed carefully by eye. Anyplace you see the end of the spoke cutting through the tape is trouble.

    If you've literally had "blowouts", that indicates the tube has blown out of the tire because the tire bead seperated from the rim. A blowout would look like major damage to the tube on it's side, much different than a puncture hole. It could be caused by excessive pressure, but also by mismatched tires and rims, wornout rims, or old or poor-quality tires.

    Most of us consider a "blowout" on the front tire to be a dangerous scenario, particularly on fast descents. If this is indeed what you've experienced, I'd say a trip to your LBS mechanic is the smart thing to do. You may need to invest in some new tires, or new tires and new rims, but regardless of the cost, your safety is worth getting it sorted.

  3. Thank you for the reply. It is quite scary when it has happened, and it has blown out in literally a second with a squeal like a firework. luckily it has happened when I have braked heavily so am down to a more reasonable speed.

    The puncture is on the right side of the inner tube oddly enough at a right angle from the ground. The puncture is about 3 mm diameter and is a flap rather than a hole but not next to the valve. The tyres look fairly new and are supposedly puncture resistant, Maybe I could consider a puncture protective strip? Will a puncture repair sticker work on a hold on a 85psi?

  5. Perhaps, ... the inner tube is the right size for the tire though obviously I cannot tell if it comfortably fills the tire when inflated. Just curious it had burst in the area of road. Could be down to overheating because of using breaks too much? Not sure a repair will hold the psi of 85, but will try tonight.

    It's unlikely it's overheating, unless you live on a steepish, twisty mountain descent. Look at the punctured inner tube. What does the puncture look like? Instead of a hole do you have two, parallel-ish slits?

  7. May be only one hole, but if its half way round the tube then its likely been pinched as he's gone over a hard edge in the road. Normally you get two holes (one each side on the rim) but sometimes you just get the one.

  8. Its a 275 feet decent over about a kilometer, so is considerable. There is just the one hole on the side, but is a flap opening of a couple of mm rather than a puncture hole as I have had before (as if a small object such as a thorn has been forced in and pulled out).

  9. I thought pinch flats were usually reserved for folks who run lower pressures, or have a habit of riding into curbs/potholes/cobblestones. I believe OP is running his max.

    Check your rims for burs as well. Even quality ones can occasionally feature something like that where the seem was welded, these can sometimes just be filled down/polished smooth.

    If you just got a new "race" bike, invest in some new inner tubes, and tires if your's have "flaps". Tires need to be able to handle varying loads, and a hull breach can lead to no good.

    I think Alienator's talking about some of the descents one would likely encounter in the big mountains, like 5-10 minutes of steady descending/brake fanning/speed scrubbing that involve thousands of ft in elevation. 1k is over in less than a minute.

    Btw: you say you are "only" inflating to 85psi, but that is the tires rated max, and usually that max corresponds to rider weight. I.e. a heavy rider should inflate to the max. It's doubtfull you over inflated but something to keep in mind.

    Yeah, but the OP didn't say how often he checks that pressure and whether or not he's smacked bumps/potholes/etc...... Given the shape and size of his puncture, I'd say snakebite is definitely out and the possibility of him needing a new rim strip is in.

    From the description of the "blowout" noise and the damage to the tube "at right angles to the ground", sounds to me like a classic, old-school blowout, complete with the whistling noise. Either the tube is getting pinched under the bead on installation, or the bead is lifting from the rim under pressure because the tire is old or not seating properly on the rim. When you install the new tube, it may help to inflate the tire to just 10-15 psi and check the seating of the beads carefully on both sides all the way around the rim. My guess is the tires aren't seating evenly on the rim. Could be age, mismatched or defective tires. Believe a trip to the LBS for new tires and tubes is in order right away. Seriously, front tire blowouts at speed can be hazardous to your health.

  12. I had great trouble installing the innertube because of the difficulty pushing the tube under the bed... I think the tire may have some dipping on one side, which could be the problem? I didnt think this would matter as on my old mountain bike, the tire is very uneven on rim and goes in and out, which has never caused popping, but the pressure is lower in those tires.
    Is there a way to tell if its the rims uneven or just the tires, bar by looking for uneven rim surface? I don't want to invest in a new front tire just for the fitting to be unadequate again.

    Spin the wheel on the bike and look at the rim against the brake pads (visually ignoring the tire). This should indicate if the wheel is true. If yes, then the tire as probably not seated properly. Sometimes the problem is that both the wheel is out of true, AND the tire is not seated properly.

    Once you've figured it's not the rim, an easy way to check is to only pump up the tire to 10-15 psi and then work it back and forth gently on the rim along the length of the tire, inspecting the gap between the tire and the rim as you go, checking to see if any inner tube is peeking out. If so gently push it in with a smooth plastic object (like a tire iron).

    Yep, "dipping" is likely the problem. If the tire bead "dips" on one side, the opposite bead will not be seated correctly. You shouldn't ride on a tire that's not properly and evenly seated on the rim all the way round, it's just too risky. I've had tires before that were difficult or impossible to get seated and tossed them out after fiddling/struggling to get them on right. My guess, as I said earlier, is that you've got an old or defective tire, worn or defective rims, or both.

    Find yourself a competent bike mechanic to look at your tires and wheels before you go down any more hills. If you buy a new tire and let the LBS mechanic mount it for you for few dollars, he will ensure it's on correctly before sending you out the door. Might cost a few bucks/quid, but your peace of mind and safety is worth it.

  15. Thanks very much for the friendly help 🙂. I will have another look at the seating tomorrow, if the problem is how I remember it and wont seat properly, I will take it to halfords tomorrow and look for new tires 🙂.
