I very recently have gotten into road biking. I have been biking everyday for the past two weeks for and average of ~20miles. This coming weekend I have two rides set up, my first two. Both have options of 50 miles and down from there. Any recommendations as to whether I should take a day off before hand or any other tips to make it is easier to tackle some of the longer routes this weekend. I would really like to take on the 50 on the second ride.
Believe it or not, if the 50 miler were on Sat, I would take off Thursday and do some easy riding on the Fri before. I'm hearing alot of excitement in the post and not much about fatique - it sounds like you are ready, and going to have fun. 20 mile rides are fine prep for a 50 miler. However, the first time doing a 50 miler it can take a bit out of you. If you have to make a choice beforehand about going for two 50's back to back, take the first one gingerly, or the 2nd may be a no go. It's gonna be 100 degrees F on Saturday, in NY anyway... prepare to pay a double tax on your body!
