I have an Edge 800 (actually two of them) and have loved them until now. I upgraded one to 2.40 Firmware and now the unit always shows between 0 and .5 MPH when standing still (on a table, etc...), in different parts of the country, etc.. The unit will continually cycle through various readings even though not moving. The cycling is continuous and doesn't pause the timer when I stop. This never happened with this unit prior to downloading the Firmware update.
Garmin support (multiple people) have contended that this is normal with this unit and within the realm of a recreational GPS. The refer to it as Satellite drift (which I understand) and state that the unit is bouncing between different strength satellite signals when standing still. The fact that others I ride with who have 800's don't have this issue doesn't seem to register with support. Their suggestion has been to put the speed sensor on my bike and use that for speed and distance..... Somewhat defeats the purpose of having the ability to quickly move the unit between bikes without having to calibrate to a new sensor. I've been really disappointed in what until now has been a phenominal customer service organization. (I have gone through multiple factory resets, hard resets and reloading of the firm ware). I've never experienced this problem with any Garmin before.
Do others have this issue and am I expecting too much of the unit to read zero miles per hour when sitting on a table with an unobstructed view of the sky....
I notice drift with my 800 when I don't have it near the sensors, but as I use the speed/cadence sensor it doesn't worry me at all.
I have to ask - if you went to the expense of getting the 800, why don't you want to install the GSC10 sensor and get the benefit of having Cadence as well as speed? I don't see the point of buying the 800 if you don't want to use the features it provides.
I have Quarq cranks so I am picking up my cadence via ant from the crank at the same time I'm getting power. I know its pricey but my bikes are my only vice....

Maybe the OP is using the features that are important to him. There is no rule that says you have to use every single feature of whatever bike computer you buy. Maybe the OP should have consulted you before his purchase.
