  1. Hello, I am trying to figure out if I have a slipped disk, buldging disk, pinched nerve or
whatever. I am 34 years old, in very good shape, but have had a history of lower back problems and
pain. I started yoga about two years ago and that really seemed to do the trick, but I have also
hurt my back doing yoga, because (I think) I took a morning class and I was just not warmed up
sufficiently (also I read a study that said most back injuries occur in the morning due to more
pressure in the disks as they rehydrate at night). TWo morning yoga classes and two injuries, only
night time yoga from now on. Anway, now to the immediate story. I was doing a morning yoga class
and during a forward bend I felt a "tinge". I am familiar with that pain and stopped pretty soon
after, but not soon enough. The pain increased and I had to go get some muscle relaxants
(tetrazepam 50mg - CNS depressant). I'm not into drugs, especially one which depresses the CNS, but
it really helps. I started light yoga, as from past injuries it seems to speed recovery and so far
it is. Here is the thing....
    ****
During a recent class I felt extreme tightness in my lower back. Normally by just being gentle
and stretching (except forward) it seems to really relax and be almost pain free by the end of
class. This time I just felt like doing a counter stretch to the pain - back bend. I did it
supported and sort of dug my fingers between my sacro-illiac joints. I felt a grinding/sliding
like sensation a slight pop and walla, my back released! The rest of the class was pretty much
pain free. Since then I find that if I lay on my back and place my hands under the same sacro-
illiac area I can often feel a pop and release. Can this be a disk sliding slightly back into
    place? Is it just muscles?
    ****
For some background on the pain, it is pretty intense. I couldn't put my right sock on (the pain
seems more on the left side) or bend well to my right. If I sit for any amount of time, once I
stant up I am all bent towards the left side. The muscles on my right side of spine (lower to mid
back) seem larger than on the left, at least swollen. Thanks for listening to the long post, In
    pain but getting better, Earthmansurfer
ps - Any comments on the drug I take (Here in germany the name is Tethexal). I only take 2X 1/4
tablet a day, which is half the recommended.

You could have any or all of the above. Or none. There is not enough information givewn except that
you certainly have enough to warrant a consultation with a spine specialist. I would recommend a
neurosurgeon or an orthopedic spine specialst (one who has special training in spine).

Exercise, including yoga, is generally not good for people with herniated/bulging/"slipped" discs.

    Best,

  3. Robert, Thanks for the reply. I am in Germany right now and will see what my medical insurance
covers. Do you have any opinion on this section below, from my post prior? " During a recent class I

Most likely muscles and/or ligaments. Discs, once "out", do not go "back in". They gradually dry up
    (desiccate).
