I am a swimmer and I was wondering if it was possible to load Sodium Phosphate 4 grams per day for 4 days leading up to a competition and then use Sodium Bicarbonate on race day at .3 g per kg of body weight. I was wondering if this will potentially produce good results or if it will be an overload of buffering agents producing negative effects?? Has anyone heard of any athletes using both phosphate and bicarbonate? My events are less than 2 minutes long.
I'm no doctor but 20 grams plus or minus of sodium bicarbinate seems like quite a bit. Twin labs Phosfuel which seemed to be a popular buffering agent in some circles when I raced in the nineties had both phosphate and bicarbinate. I didn't use it often but occasionally loaded the day before a race. I believe it was something like 4g sodium phosphate and 1g pottasium bicarb. Twin labs did recommend a 3 day load, 3 or 4 times daily for optimal results. Edit: The upside of using an over the counter performance "enhancer" is that it usually entails a recommended dose. These ingredients have been known to cause gastric distress so indeed you may want to consult someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
I would certainly go to a bike forum or to GNC to read labels if I had a question about using a medication in a non-standard way. Certainly. Yup. Absolutely. Heck, I'd call Twinlabs up and ask to speak directly to their lead scientist.......I mean lead marketing guy. I'll bet Twinlabs isn't overflowing with scientists and actual research. Yep. That's what I'd do.
