all electronic devices have that scary unpredictable functioning, your internet browser crashes every now and then with no warning, same for computer operating systems, your ipod needs reseting (by exhausting the battery) without logical reason, as depicted in cable TV electronic systems fail in airplanes, your TV cable box needs resetting sometimes, same as your internet router and so on... like some other poster wrote about the Shimano Di2; the last thing you want is yet one more variable to worry about on your bike !

ok in the sense that there is no software on them, maybe they work 100%,

I think Shimano Di2 has proven its reliability over the last two years, and given the long time (since 1992) that Campy has been working on e-gruppos, my inclination is to think that it will be dead reliable, too. In terms of firmware, bicycle gear shifting is dead simple, even if you configure the system to shift sequentially by gear ratio. Electronics have also become dead reliable in so many applications. I'll point out that Voyager is still sending back good data 39 years after its launch and has left our solar system. Sure, it might not be wet out there like some of the classic Paris-Roubaix editions, but it's also not exactly hospitable. Technically it's what's called a "harsh environment". Sure that's an extreme example, but solid state electronics have proven their durability and reliability. Hell, even the ol' saw about the reliability of Italian electronics is dead. Ducatis have dead reliable electronics now, and Magneti Marelli are producing electrical systems for racing machines that are the non plus ultra of the species.

I think at the point in time at which there are no technical hurdles to overcome in implementing electronic gruppos on bikes. We're not in Kansas anymore, but I think for a very long while, mechanical options will exist.
