Hoping I might start with a question that has some good answres.
I'm going to buy a new road bike soon - next couple weeks.
I'm wondering what sort of rear-view mirrors you guys might recommend. I don't want something stuck to my helmet or my glasses. I want to look into option for a mirror attached to the bars, specifically for the left side. I want to be able to see traffic approaching from behind and to my left - other bikes as well as cars.
so any recommendations you folks might have would be greatly appreciated!!!
There are a few options available. Check out your LBS. I saw one that looked more areo than the round thing I have sticking out of my bar, but the mirror size was very small. I'm willing to sacrifice some areo for a better look back - cars are scary man.
FWIW a mirror on the right side is all but useless. You can see the whole swatch of what's behind you with 1 mirror on the left side.
Based on what little experience I've had lately I have to agree that a right-side mirror would be pretty useless. All the stuff I wanna see will most likely be on my left.
I can/will certainly check my LBS, but I was hoping for some recs from people who aren't trying to get some money out of me.
There are mirrors available that look cooler, but I think a round mirror works the best for me.
I tried a Blackburn road mirror and the mounting arm and adjustment mechanism were so flimsy that even when riding on a smooth road the mirror vibrated too much to see anything clearly and wouldn't stay in adjustment more than 5 minutes.....
It works great because it is up high and to the left, but will only work on Shimano shifters from earlier than 2010 or so. The new kind that have both cables under the handlebar tape won't work. I have it on my commuter bike.
On my road bike that has newer brifters, I tried several that fit into the bar end. The aero ones were too small, being on the end of the bar, were not far enough away from the bike to show much, and didn't stay in place.
I found that a Cateye BM-500G like this works quite well when the arm is protruding to the left from the bar end and the mirror is rotated to a vertical position. The arm keeps it far enough away to show the road well and it doesn't interfere with my hands on the drops too much. [IMG]cyclingforums.com220Open ↗[/IMG]
