Are we speaking about chains or cables? I agree about cables but chains are a different matter. Perhaps it was not so much the chain as the lock securing the chain? Just asking.

There are chains from Krpto and OnGuard that the chain alone can weigh 6 pounds PLUS the lock. Then there's issue as to how to carry it. These monster chains are still not bullet proof, as any lock can be defeated either by tools or by picking, but most places other then the biggest cities, the bike would be relatively safe with a less heavy duty locking system then a monster chain.

Again though always try to use two different type of locking systems like a heavy duty U lock and a thickest cable lock you can find (some cable locks have a steel outer armored covering), having two different kind of locking systems will frustrate a thief to no end because he would have to have two different set of tools thus he will just move on. Lock pickers in the USA are still not that common except in the biggest cities like NY, and even there their not real common yet...but will be. The most commonly used tool by the thief is the battery powered angle grinder, this thing will slice through the thickest U bolt in under a minute, but there is a noise penalty, but most citizens go out of their way to ignore a possible theft in progress and the thief knows this, or they do it in a more remote area or time of day or night where they'll be gone before the cops arrive. If I lived in a city where that sort of thing was fairly common I would be riding and locking up a beater bike and saving the nice bike for weekend rides etc where I would always be with it. Also don't be afraid to ask your job if you can bring the bike inside.
