I was out riding 9 days ago, when a devil dog came from out of nowhere and was trying to grab my foot. I sped up to out-ride the dog, and as I hit about 30 mph, the dog ran in front of my me, causing me to hit him and go down. My right foot was still attached to the pedal, and my left leg was now under the right side of the bike. I hit face-first on the pavement, then bounced and hit the right side of my head (thank you God for a great helmet!) I dragged for a little bit, tearing up my right forearm just distal to the elbow.
There was a witness, thankfully, who came to check on me, helped me up, and eventually took me to where my vehicle was parked. I did go to the walk-in clinic (I first went home, showered, and assessed my injuries - I'm a nursing student, lol), and they did xrays of my right shoulder, right elbow, and right hip. Nothing appeared to be broken, yet I've sustained a grade 3 right groin strain, hairline fracture on bridge of my nose, black eye, hematoma on right elbow/forearm area, and substantial contusion on the front, side and rear of the upper right thigh. I also have numbness over this contusion area, as well as occasionally down the right leg. Not too much, but I can feel it radiate occasionally.
I want to get the doc to re-look the xrays, because her focus was primarily on the right hip joint, not the pubic bones. As time has progressed, I am suspicious of a right pubic ramus fracture. I have extreme tenderness and some pain when I do side-lying ABduction with the right leg, sometimes not being able to raise my leg without really focusing on doing so. Adduction is difficult, if it is done past the midline of the body. Walking is sometimes very difficult, especially anything faster than a turtle's speed. I am a licensed massage therapist, specializing in injury treatment and rehab, so I am doing my own PT regimen (doctor-approved), with slow, but progressive, results. Prior to the accident, I had been doing the elliptical at the gym for usually 50-60 minutes, with interval sprints at fast speeds (up to 13 mph.) I can now do maybe 30-40 minutes at a mild speed (6-8 mph) with no sprinting. I don't have any pain or discomfort when doing the elliptical, and the rest of the day is generally pain-free. I am only doing the elliptical a few days a week, with a day or two of rest in-between, trying to be sure to not overdo it.
I’m off work (work involves being on my feet 10 hours a day, 3 days a week), because of the obvious reasons, which stinks, lol. Loss of income, loss of mobility, loss of ability to exercise...not pleasant. I’m pretty positive, so I am looking at this as a challenge for me to design a program of therapy and healing for my body. (I’m a struggling full-time nursing student, so the funds aren’t available for PT.)
I apologize for rambling, but I am wanting thoughts from others who may have suffered the same type of injuries, whether this sounds like a fracture to the pubic ramus, and how long it took for you to heal and get back on the bike. By the way, I am a healthy 49 year-old female, very athletic and active all of my life.
