Hi, New to the Forum-so please excuse me for asking a few obvious questions.
My usual ride to work was a 1600cc Kawi-but that pleasure has been revoked for the "usual" reasons, for the next 180 days or so...
But, before I was a biker, I rode bicycles. A lot.
But that was about 20 years ago. Nowadays I have a good bicycle (Giant Transend) with a Shimano Nexus hub, which is the coolest thing since sliced bread in my not so humble opinion.
As I'm about to become a bicycle commuter again (and actually looking forward to it-grmbl...) I need advice from others on how to transition into it.
Here's the specifics:
Commute ride: 18km, one way. Through clever routing, mostly flat
Temperatures: low singles (C) morning, teens afternoon.
Fitness level is average, but previously able to horse around a 300Kg bike on a daily basis, so not a total slouch.
Minor issues with arthritis, managed with meds.
Route is a mix of designated bike paths and roads I know to be quiet, so not an issue.
I tried to use public transit, but the routes here in Perth don't nicely match my reality. Seriously-despite a cross-highway pedestrian bridge being within 300 meters of a station-the walk to meet it is about 2km. Close to 1 km on the other end-over hills.
Since my exercise requirement on the public transport route (walking to and from stations) started to rival just flat-out riding to work on a bicycle-I've opted to return to my roots. There is no way to integrate the two (Transperth is a bit anal in the restriction of bicycles on their resources) so I suppose I just need to suck it up and do it.
How can I do this without making myself a total wreck?
YES, I know-short rides-started that last weekend...but what else might help?
Besides-I've seen the "writing on the wall" previously...bicycles are the answer to all of our commuter and obesity problems-despite the public's current disdain towards them.
Who knows? Maybe there's a book in this? But for now-please, help! Please label me for now:
A willing, if worried biker.
