Garmin team rider Vansummeren beat defending champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland and Maarten Tjallingii of the Netherlands into second and third positions. A portion of the 160-mile course to Roubaix, near the Belgian border, is renowned for its difficulty as it’s ridden over cobblestones. Vansummeren finished in 6 hours, 7 minutes, 28 seconds, a winning margin of 19 seconds. “I think this is the luckiest day of my career,†he was cited as saying by Agence France-Presse. “This is the reason I’m a professional cyclist.†Three-time Paris-Roubaix winner Tom Boonen of Belgium had to drop out after mechanical trouble, followed by a crash. The Garmin-Cervelo rider was part of a four-man breakaway that edged clear as the prestigious race entered its closing stages. The Belgian unleashed his solo effort 14.5 kilometres from home on the punishing Carrefour de l'Arbre cobbled section, setting up a nail-biting time trial to the line. Former winner Stuart O’Grady (Leopard-Trek) was among the riders who survived Roubaix’s infamous cobbles to cross the line in the velodrome only to have their results erased because they were beyond the time limit. All races have time cuts, but it almost seems cruel to enforce the rules at a race as punishing and dangerous as Roubaix. Paris-Roubaix 2011: race preview of 'the hell of the north' The Italians, no doubt, will argue that their own Milan-San Remo or Giro di Lombardia monuments eclipse Paris-Roubaix. Likewise, the Belgians may feel that the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège monuments hold stronger places in the pantheon of cycling.
