a nice cheap cycling online store i found

While clearly written by someone to whom English is a second language, (or run through babblefish) I decided to give the shop a try and ordered a single pair of bib-shorts to try them out. I will report back once I get them and let you know how they are.,.. (at this point, I only own 2 pair of cycling shorts - both bib shorts and pretty high quality so while I do not have a lot of experience with them, I do have something decent to compare them to.)

For $32 including shipping, I thought it was worth a try to see how they are. If nothing else, they can become a backup pair of shorts for me to use on shorter rides....

Well, as an update, 1 week and 1 day - still no word on shipping...

I ordered 1 pair of bib shorts and after the less than glowing reviews above - I guess I am not in a hurry to get the in.

Oh well - live and learn. Assuming I actually get something, I will post some pics and impressions....

As you know, because you work there, " da quality is like apparently cheap and crappy like". :-)

I recieved my bib shorts last night. Almost 3 weeks to the day since I ordered them (a typical shipping time from China) Since it is wet and cold in the midwest still, I have not tried them out yet. I can comment on how they look compared to what else I have though...

As a quick overview - I do not typically ride in cycling shorts. My rides up to about 30 miles are typically in running shorts (over a wicking style of underwear or compression shorts). Late last year I purchased a pair of pearl Izumi bib tights for colder weather riding. Also on black friday last year I purchased 2 pair of louis garneau bib shorts. I have worn all 3 now on rides up to about 30 miles and I would consider them more comfortable than running shorts, but I would still have trouble paying the $150+ price that the bike store had on them originally. (I paid significantly less as they were on clearance and i am sure a few model years old, but I would still consider them very nice.)

I wrote up a long post about them last night but my computer crashed prior to me posting it so now I have to recall everything from memory. If you have an specific questions, let me know.

Over all look:
They do look nice and feel decent upon first opening them. (keep in mind I have not tried them on yet) The leg openings have elastic around them to grip your legs, but they are not nearly as "tacky" feeling as the louis garneau bib shorts in this area. The new shorts feel almost like elastic sewn into the material - the louis garneau bib shorts have a soft rubber sewn into the leg that really grips well.

Seams
The seams on both my other bibs are flat and smooth to the material. (I think this is what they mean by "flatlock" seams) On the new shorts it is like the material just comes together and is sewn (on the inside of the shorts) making a ridge. The material is very soft so I don't anticipate any comfort issues from this, but I am concerned about durability as I would imagine that the seams would blow out much easier on this style of seam. Then again - time will tell....

Material
Both my other bibs (when you look at the tag on the bibs) say something like 23% lycra and 77% polyester. (not the exact percentage, but something like that) On the new bibs, there is a cardboard tag connected to them that is a lycra advertisement. (the standard advertising tags that are on clothes and connected with a little piece of plastic to the bibs) but when you look at the tag sewn into the bibs, it says 100% polyester. Based on that - I am not sure if they have lycra in them or not. They do stretch about like my other shorts, but not being mentioned on the tag bothers me. Anyway - it feels fine and like I said, I have not tried them on yet so I guess time will tell how well they form fit. (the purpose of the lycra)

As long as we are talking about tags, they have a tag that says made in italy on them. Not sure what thats about or if it matters.

Pad
The pad in the shorts have CoolMax set in the pad. (louis garneau and Pearl Izumi apparently have their own pad designed for them and between the two I prefer the Pearl Izumi) The pad appears to be very soft and should be quite comfortable. There is an extra layer of stitching on the pad that may prove to be irritating on longer rides though. (I will let you know if the rain ever stops here) On both my other bibs, the only seam on the pad is where it connects to the shorts/tights - on the new bibs, the coolmax pad appears to be only the size of the "raised part" of the pad. That is sewn on to another pad that connects the coolmax to the polyester of the bib shorts. I know this is a bad description, so i will try and post some photos of it when I get home tonight. It may be fine, but it is definately different than my other bib shorts.

Value:
I will have to reserve judgement on this until I get a few rides in, but for what I paid, they seem to be decent. They are no where near the quality of my other shorts, but really I am just hoping they are more comfortable than riding in running shorts. I am guessing they will be somewhere between running shorts and good bibs, but as I said - time will tell. For now, I am not considering them a complete waste of money, but if you can find quality ones on clearance somewhere - that would be a much better investment based on what I have seen so far.

As I said - I have not ridden in them yet (or even tried them on) so I reserve the right to change my mind at a later date and say they are awesome or complete [censored] depending on how that goes... 🙂 There is my update.

I'm an odd duck...as some of you already know, but I buy cheap plain, ie no design, jersey's from Walmart or Target for $14. Why? Because their made of 100% polyester, which is the same material I have in a $145 jersey (I got on closeout for $65) that I still have left from the expensive stuff. 100% polyester is 100 percent polyester, one doesn't work any better then the other no matter what magical mystical scientific name they apply to it or how much you spend. I use to live in the desert of California where I rode in temps over 100 degrees and switched back and forth from a cheap Walmart jerseys to some expensive ones and never...NEVER could I tell the difference, and they all stunk the same afterwards. The Walmart ones seem to last almost as long as the expensive ones. And I hate jerseys that make me look like a billboard, or a wannebe Lance Armstrong, I figure if their not going to pay me to wear their ugly billboards then I ain't wearing it!!!

Shorts are a different matter. Cheap shorts will wear out and not provide the comfort level you need if your riding any type of distance. So I don't mind spending money for those, but I only buy closeouts. I also detest wearing the lycra skin tight shorts, I don't like having the package bulging out, if I wanted that look I would just ride naked since it takes no imagination to see whats going on anyways!! So I buy MTB shorts. Lycra shorts are however cooler if your riding in a very hot climate like the desert of California in the summer time vs MTB shorts, but since I no longer live in that climate I wear just MTB shorts. MTB shorts are very versatile and made stronger too, you can wear them into a store, you don't have to worry about snags, and if it rains you don't get as wet.

Socks? again, cheap Walmart or Target socks made of 100% polyester, just like the expensive ones, and I can't tell the difference.

I do own several wool jerseys and socks that were expensive, but wool doesn't stink like polyester, I wear those when I know I'll be staying out for more then one day.

I know what some of you are thinking, I'm a cheapskate, yes I am, but I'm not in debt either as most of you are.

Me too: I buy most of my bibs off the discount rack at the local bike clothing joint, who always hava a fair amount of good stuff (Nalini, Santini, Giordana, Vermarc, etc) for 50 to 60 bucks, which is half to a third of normal retail. I hardly ever buy tops, because they take so long to wear out. :-)

Here is my story dealing with another cheap online store from China named cycle-wear.com. I knew beforehand that I would be dealing with knock off, cheap products and an obscure manufacturer with a uncertain credentials. I could not find any return address on their web page in case i need to exchange the merchandise.
Despite this I decided to give it a try to see for myself , at worse I write off $80.00 as a loss and learn a lesson .

Bought bibs, top, cap, arm warmers for $75.00 . Struggled with making sure the sizing is correct, measuring my cycling kit and calculating from inch to cm.
Got my merchandise in 2 weeks, quality was mediocre, substandard , bibs very poorly done, arm warmers are more "arm covers" then warmers , top and cap was ok.

Despite my careful measuring and calculating the size was still off. Used return address from the package , included the original email and receipt from PayPal etc. and asked for an exchange ... after a few Emails t a CONTACT etc. there was no reply .It's been 3 month now and I know I'll never see the merchandise again. Once they have your money there is no recourse .

I would NOT recommend this web site at all, but if you still decide to buy from them , make sure you get your sizing right !!
