The "rules" for brakes are that mini-Vs, canti- and caliper brakes have the same pull. Only full size V-brakes and mechanical discs are different. If you want to be real specific, a V-brake is a type of cantilever brake, but no one really talks about that.

About the 9-speed vs 10-speed you might want to check out if there's a JTEk shiftmate that can help you.

I'm looking for advise on Shimano-compatible STIs for small women. I have been to several bike shops and discovered that the Shimano 105 STIs (for 10-speed) fit my hands. However, I am building a 9-speed.

I tried the Tiagra STIs with spacers, and they were still too big.

I found an off-brand, Microshift, in 9-speed that fits my hand. I know it is compatible with road brakes, but I don't know if it is compatible with cantilever brakes. Does anyone know about this?

I read about the Ultegra short-reach STIs online. Have you tried them?

Any advice on finding STIs the same size as the 105s but for 9-speed?

Those MicoShift levers are compatible with road brakes and they work OK.

Didn't Shimano offer the R600 STI's and compact cranks in a 9 speed psuedo groupset that was about Ultegra level? IIRC, the R600 STI levers were better suited to little hands...

They're no longer in the catalog, so I'd say they're no longer being made. Somebody might still have a set in a dusty old box.

But if I were you, I'd get some Campagnolo 11-speed shifters (2010 version on sale 50% off @ Competitive Cyclist); they work perfectly with Shimano's 9-speed drivetrain. The Campagnolo 11-speed shifters have almost the exact same pull as Shimano 9-speed shifters. Plus, they're sized for small hands (and come with optional adapters for larger hands).

10-speed Campagnolo shifters will work, too, for most non-Campagnolo drivetrains..

BTW. That's a great price for a set of 11-speed Record shifters!
