  1. Hi, wonder if anyone can help me

I am cycling from London to Rome this summer and am currently planning my route. I am debating whether to buy a gps device or just use paper maps. I do have an iphone and have heard there are alot of cycle gps apps out there.

Could anyone give me advice on iPhone apps I could try out for this or a gps device that is reasonably priced (preferrably under £160)

    Thanks

  2. well i used to use the Motion X GPS app on the iphone. It was great for recording rides and reviewing the stats later however there were two main draw backd for me:

    1) It drained the battery very fast - i didn't bother trying on rides approaching 2 hours.
    2) Navigating was not great as it has to download the map tiles as you move. Hit an area with poor mobile reception and you suddenly have no maps. You can download them prior and cache them for short rides but i doubt you'd ever get anywhere near Rome doing this!

I recently decided to take the plunge and buy a Garmin 800. I really pleased with it, battery life is easily 15 hours and the mapping is very detailed and always on the device so no losing maps in a black spot.

Here is a little review i wrote on it if interested...

    Good luck with your ride!
