new bikes come good out-of-the-box from 600 usd and up, a very resonable cost in my opinion. Like the Cannondale R-7, Trek 4000 series, Scott Aspect series, etc

I agree with VSPA. For $575 to $700 you can get a very good hardtail mountain bike. Giant Revel, Specialized rockhopper, Trek 4000 series. you need to see what manufacturer's geometry fits you. I cant ride Specialized because the top tubes are very long and I have a short torso. I have a Trek 4300 that fits me perfectly. Stay away from Trek 3000 series, Specialized Hardrock, Giant Boulder. These bikes are meant for cruising around town. If you take them "mountain biking" you will destroy the components.
Bottom line go test ride some bikes and buy the one fits you the best. Find a bike store that is willing to spend time with you and help you make a good choice. Walk right out if they dont want to take the time to make sure the bike is right for you.
