I'm planning a summer 2011 trip across Hokkaido, Japan. I'm currently mapping the route here and would like to get feedback and recommendations about GPS units. Have you used one in Japan? Will any GPS unit work in Japan, or are they like mobile phones and restricted by regional or national carriers/territories?

Any gps will work anywhere in the world. As far as mapping features I would get a higher end garmin edge like the 705 or the new 800 if your budget allows.

Hi, MMM. If I get a Garmin Edge unit what maps come installed? Does that depend on where I live? Do I need to buy a map for Japan? Would it be better to buy such a unit in Japan with a Japan map preinstalled?

A very basic map like all gps units. However with garmin you can purchase detailed road maps for your unit they have maps for most locations in the world. here is a link for the SE Asia map download for the 800 linky link If you can tell I would get the 800 but thats just me.

Was just looking at a review at Amazon for the 705 and see this unit may not work for me on a long journey as the it uses its own battery. I might not be near a plug every day. Being able to swap out a couple of AA batteries - when needed - would be much better.

You could always go with a traditional handheld Garmin without all the bike features. I have an older edge unit that I use when I am in the woods and it can also download maps. It does take AA batteries.
this route would save you some money and give you the basic maping you would need. I would stick with Garmin they make great products.

i'd go for the garmin edge 800 if i were you.
they all come loaded with very basic mapping which are next to useless. you can buy addon more detailed maps either on DVD and load them to the device or on a mini sd card which slots into the 800 (this is the option i went for).
