Ok, this might be a little long, so I hope you bear with me.
I currently have a Schwinn World Sport that I bought in '88 when I was about 14. As I recall, it set me back about $250. I rode it quite a bit until I got my first motorized wheels (a motorcycle) maybe 5 years later. It sat in the garage until about 2000 when I got it out to get back in shape, but I only rode it a few times for a week or so, then it got parked again until this year. A good friend of mine is the local Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity, and he's a life-long cyclist. He talked me into going along on their 7-day 360-mile Cover Indiana ride back in May. Of course, I had to replace a few things on it, and have upgraded some others this year, and did the Habitat Bucket 100 (Bloomington-Lafayette, 120 miles) last weekend. So the bug has bitten me...I've put in probably at least 800 miles this year, and may try for 1000 yet, we'll see. As a painting contractor, work takes quite a bit out of me physically, so I can't always get out as often as I'd like.
Anyway, I've decided that I'd like to piecemeal my way to a new bike--that is, upgrade all the components first, then transfer them to a new frame in a couple years. Right now, my bike and all the gear I haul on it when I ride (including water) comes to about 37 lbs. I understand that I may have to replace some components to get the correct fitment on a new frame.
So, what I'm trying to do right now is put together a plan to upgrade the drivetrain. Currently, it's an almost-stock 12-speed, with the exception of the inner chainring in front, which I swapped from a 40T to a 34T, effectively giving me 2 more lower gears for climbing hills. The front rings are 52 and 34, and the rears are 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, if I recall. After the riding I've done this year, I've figured out that I would like something like a 53-39-30 front and maybe a 11-32 rear. I definitely want to go a bit lower yet, and I want some bigger gears, too. My problem is that after poking around online, I just don't know what will work with what. I know I'll need new brake/shifter handles, and probably a new rear wheel to accept a modern cassette, along with the chainrings, cassette and derailleurs. I'd also like to try to keep this whole upgrade under $1k (I'll probably do it next spring, then maybe a new frame/fork the following spring with a $1-1.5k budget). I'm also planning to buy the appropriate specialty tools I'll need along the way (I do most of my own wrench-turning on my vehicles, so I have a well-equipped garage for standard tools).
What say you?
Thanks,
Jason
