  1. Hi All,

I'm getting a lot of flats. Anyone have any resources for different kinds of tubes? I'm doing everything right...I think. Velox, right size covers whole rim. Right pressure each time I ride. Good tires.

    Thanks,

    J

  2. Are you sure your tires aren't worn out?

Yep, less than 500 miles. Kenda tires.

  4. Wow that is bad. Normally I only get many punctures when the tires are getting thin. perhaps another option is to add tire liners as an added layer of protection?

Quite often cheaper tubes are actually a bit thicker, but that makes them heavier (I don't care about that). There are tubes with self sealers built in, but they seem awfully pricey to me.

  5. Maybe it's just your turn. I had two yesterday in 40 miles. First in 300

  6. What type of flats are you getting? Have you checked the inside of your tire to make sure that whatever has puntured you tire has been removed?

  7. What is "a lot" of flats? How many?

  8. I'm not sure what possible benefit changing tubes will give you. They all have the same sort of rubber.

Firstly, the tube is not what holds the air pressure. That job falls to the tyre, rim and tape.

Secondly the tyre is what is supposed to keep out the sharp things. Anything which can cut through several layers of cotton/nylon/kevlar/aramid and a layer of hard rubber, will also make very short work of a layer of soft rubber. I doubt even doubling the thickness of your tube wall will make a discernible difference.

Check that you don't have some fine glass or street sweeper brush or car-tyre belting sticking through your tyre casing. They can be remarkably well hidden and difficult to see when out on the roadside with an elevated heart rate. Often when looking at the tyre they can be buried in the casing and only get exposed (just enough to cause a puncture) once the tyre is inflated.

This happened to me once in a crit. I took a lap out to do a quick tube change only to get another flat within the next two laps (I couldn't find any sharp in the tyre casing). By the time this had happened three times I was a thoroughly over it (and so were those who had given me tubes). The third time I finally found the culprit (the tiniest shard of needle sharp glass) but, by then I'd decided to call it a day.
