I started using SPD pedals with a trail bike - now have a road bike and have SPD SL's (I think this is correct). The have the road bike clip and protective triangle around them.
My question is - with the SPD's I can clip out and still put feet back and pedal (e.g., parking lot) - with the SPD SL's my feet tend to slip off the pedals.
Now, I am new with the SPD SL's and will practice until I draw a strong conclusion. I was curious if anyone else uses SPD's with a road bike or more using the SL's - or does this make any sense.

Yes, that does make sense.
IMO you are more apt to experience some slippage when you pedal unclipped with SPD-SLs than you would with SPDs.
You'll get used to it the more you use them. I use SPD-SLs on my road bikes and I usually just unclip my left foot when I'm in that situation and I can easily ride across a parking lot or through an traffic intersection without that foot clipped in. Sometimes I'm pedaling on the backside of the pedal, doesn't really matter to me.
Just keep using them and you'll figure out how to do it the best for you.
