My wife and I have been riding hybrid's for about 3 years. We would like to graduate to road bikes. Were thinking of spending about $1000. Would spend more if it ment better comfort for longer rides. We are in our early 50's, We currently ride about 8 miles a day after work and about 35 miles on the weekends. We average about 16 miles an hour. Were not sure what kind of bikes to get. We live in a small town in northern MN and don't have easy access to a good bike shop that answer questions. Any suggestions?

Are you wanting to spend $1000 each or for the pair?
Have you considered a tandem?
Now's a good time to shop for bikes due to end of season sales.
If your wanting to spend about $500 each the Schwinn Circuit or Fastback Sport, Raleigh Grand Sport and the Giant OCR 3, Jamis Ventura Comp, Trek 1000, and maybe the Felt Z 100 are probably the best deals going.
If your wanting to spend $1000 each then look at Lemond Reno, Cannondale Cad 9 7, Felt F85 and the Trek 1.5.
Tandem wise, Salsa makes a good one for about $1,200 as does Cannodale for about $1,600.
Note all of the above bike prices are suggested retail prices, most shops sell them for less then that, and now with end of season close out sales you can get them for even less. Our LBS in town has the Cannondale tandem on sale for 1,100. Also with Tandems it's not uncommon to find 2 year old brand new one's in LBS's that never sold.

We plan on each spending $1000. We aren't looking for a tandem bike. Thanks for your input. We will look into those brands. Is it worth the extra money to spend on a composite? -

Your asking the wrong person, I'm anti-carbon unless you have a lot of money and want the lightest bike money can buy and don't care if it gets even slightly damaged you have to replace it, and by slightly I mean damage that would normally be just a scratch through the paint to bare metal on aluminum or steel.
