  1. Hello all,

I have entered into the Durham 'Beast' Bike ride on Sept 5th. The route is 50 miles and 4700ft of climbing.

I have been training through the summer for the ride, focusing on the hills, my main route being a 22mile course with 3000 ft of climbing (yes my area is v v hilly!)

I have done practically no rides longer than this, with the exception of 2 80mile rides, however these were mainly on flat terrain.

I have 4 weeks to the event (therefore 3 of actual training), and wondering where I can best put my efforts to get the time down. How many times should I do the actual route itself (I was thinking at least once in order to get some confidence)

I was also hoping for a worthwhile goal to aim for. My PB for the 2 mile course is 1 hr 30, although obviously this pace would not be sustainable over the remaining 30 miles.

    Thoughts?

  2. Isn't the route 25 miles?. Or is the race 2 loops of the circuit?.

1/ ½ hours to cover 2 miles?...

    Was it handstanding only?.

    Are you male or female?.

    What bodyweight are you?.

    Chapeau the 22 mile course.

Course is one 50 mile circuit ('The Beast' one posted at the bottom of that page you linked)

  6. The one piece of advice I will give is that the weekend before keep any training easy. Go for an easy ride to keep the legs fresh, but you won't be able to gain any extra fitness at that point. So use it as a rest period to rebuild strength. Eat well, consume liquids well. Enter the race well hydrated. Have fun.

  7. Thanks TKOS. That leaves me with 3 weeks of actual training.

I have just ridden the course in a shade over 3 1/2 hours. V V hilly, 1000ft of climbing for every 10 miles. Last 10 miles felt difficult. I will upgrade my target time to 3 hr 20 min, feel its possible to gain an additional 10 minutes with a further 3 weeks training and getting familiar with the route.

I wonder what the stronger riders will be doing it in.. guessing 2 hr 30 given the hilly nature of the course?
