Do rollers wear tires?

  1. I have heard from plenty of sources that regular resistance trainers will "eat" your tire... do rollers do the same? And why do they eat tires in the first place?

    Yes, they wear tires. Why? For the same reason that roads wear tires: generation of heat, which over time, can dry the tread out; abrasion between the roller surface and the tire.....

    Anywhere there is friction there will be heat and wear. There is friction on the road which wears tyres out gradually. A trainer just accelerates the process by pushing the roller tightly onto the tyre to get good grip from a smaller contact patch. Rollers essentially do the same thing as trainers to your tyres, though rollers may not be as harsh.

  4. according to my trainer user guide the tire will wear about 0.01 inches riding more than 6.000 miles so...
    in fact i have been doing pretty solid weeks on the trainer and tire looks ok to me

    The sharply curved roller surface focuses the contact pressure on a smaller portion of the tire tread, compared to a flat road surface.
