I'm a recent addition to road cycling and I was wondering what is the best way to get into some minor racing events, nothing serious, in order to get the ball rolling!

Mark, if you're in the US, go to USA cycling. Get yourself a Cat5 license.
www.usacycling.org -- The Official Website of USA Cycling
Then go to bikereg.com and find a list of events in your area. Local clubs in your area will also have upcoming race info. -
