I use a 21 gear mountain bike. Cruising speed is only about 20km (12.5MPH) and I think I can hold my sprint for 300 meters or so at 30km (19MPH) are these good speeds for a casual rider while on flat ground, also I was wondering how much faster you could go on a hybrid bike because my friend has a hybrid and even though I'm a stronger rider than her sometimes she out sprints me because of thinner tires so I'm just wondering how fast you could go on a mountain bike and how much faster a hybrid is.

My cruising speed has dropped a bit due to being off the bike for a year and a half up until just this spring due to hemorrhoids. Then I tried to get back on it only to hurt my rotator cuff attempting to break a head bolt loose on one of my engines. This rotator cuff is the same one I injured and dislocated twice back in my bicycle racing days, so now it looks like surgery is looming. Thus with the time off and the injury (and being 56?) I'm only averaging 16mph over a 20 mile course on a road bike. Prior to just before the hemorrhoids I was averaging 24mph over the same 20 mile course. On the MTB my average with semi-slicks is about 4mph less then the road.

It's all about the gearing assuming that your cadence is constant. A MTB with fat 26" wheels and22-32-44 chain rings and an 11-32 cassette needs a lot more effort to match the speed of a hybrid or road bike...
