Other than enjoy watching the photos of the magnificent headquarters that european top pro teams have, i can't help but think how much money they could spare... specially in the current economical post crisis climate.
With the exception on Team TT, i don't think that non-specialist riders or non general-classification riders need them.
In fact many years ago i met a belgian pro who just wanted to sell his, which the team gaved him.
I think a lot of if has to do with the advertising factor of pro cycling. A team/sponsor just looks powerful if it can supply all of its members with top-of-the-line equipment.
But yeah, it's definitely excessive. Especially in stage races in which non-specialists treat the TT as a rest day...Well, having everyone decked out does help at the beginning of the Tour, since the TTT starts in reverse order of the TC, so teams that do well in the prologue get to start later in the TTT.
In my collegiate races Aero equipment is banned in all categories except for the top one. It kind of helps a little since college students can't really afford this stuff anyway.
There's still some room in my basement/cycling haven for a few more bikes if there are any pro teams out there that are looking to get rid of bikes to save space. 😄
