  1. Brief intro... 35 year old male, loved biking as a kid but lost interest for a good 20 years. My kids got into bikes last summer and we spent much time on short trips on the local greenway. Now that spring has broken I am in the market for a new bike.

I know absolutely nothing about bikes, the bike I rode last summer was old, used, uncomfortable, and given to me... but here is what I would like to use it for:

    - Short(ish) treks on greenway with the kids

    - Would like to build myself up to solo full circuit down and back greenway trips twice weekly (50 miles round trip)

    - if all goes well I would like to close out summer/bring in autumn with a ride across Ohio (buddy in eastern Indy who would be happy to drive me home)

I have spent the last few days trying to research bikes, but it is turning out to be difficult having no knowledge at all going in... all I have figured out so far is that I should probably be looking into a hybrid (and even that conclusion may be wrong)

Any advice on what I should be looking for would be GREATLY appriciated! I am 5' 10" / 180lbs (if that matters) and my budget is around $400

    Thanks!!

  2. A hybrid would probably work well for your application.

For starters, I think you should visit some local bike shops (LBS) with the intent to do some tire kicking as opposed to buying.

Let them know what type of riding you intend to do, and see what bikes they suggest. Test ride a few.

This will give you a very good idea of what size bike you need, so make note of that. Proper bike fit is very important!

In your budget range you can get a pretty good bike, if you buy it used. If you want a new bike you are going to be pretty limited.

If one of your LBS has a good used bike that fits you prefectly and is in your budget range, then I think that's the best way to go. Most LBS will stand behind used bikes that they sell if there are problems. But, make sure you check out their policy...it's no different than buying a used car.

  3. Thanks for the info, after further research and trips to the bike shop I decided on a 2010 Trek 7.2FX. Being built as we speak and will be picking it up Monday 🙂

Sweet! I've heard good things about those bikes.

    Have fun!
