  1. hi guys, perhaps the more experienced runners here can help me in sorting this out. about ten
minutes into my run, i developed a pain on the outside of my knee, which very quickly became so
strong that i could not even will myself to run. afterwards, the knee was not really inflamed. i
applied cold, which did not seem to help much, then heat with similar result. after a week of
resting and stretching, i tried again yesterday, and this time, it was not even ten minutes, when i
felt the same thing. needless to say, this is very frustrating. now, i used to have ITB problems in
the past, but i thought that was taken care of by lots of stretching before & after the run. while
the location of the pain was about the same, the pain level was not even close. in the past, i could
finish my run, and, anyhow, the pain did not show up that early in the run. also, the place where
ITB attaches to the knee is not particularly tender (but it was when i had ITB problems in the
past). what else could it be if not ITB? i am planning on waiting for at least two weeks before
trying to run again. should i wait even longer? i am not sure if it is at all related but i'm also
nursing a pulled muscile in the back, which for some reason did not heal since mid- september. while
annoying for bunch of other activities, it did not bother me in the least when running. i recently
went to chiropractor to sort out the back pain. it is hard to believe that the adjustment and
sending weak currents through my back can screw up the knee but then again, i am no doctor. thanks
    in advance, ilya

    Ilya,

I'd roll on the outside of the quads and the ITB. You can see two examples of the rolling at

Author of the following link argues that you must strengthen the hips in a particular way to
    protect yourself.

If you have the patience, the following link discusses causes in depth:
