I'm not new to biking, I'm just new to commuting. I live in grand rapids MI. I usually ride the dirt trails, or the paved trail here in Michigan call the white pine trail. I have a mountain bike and can easily average 15 mph or more depending on the road. I've commuted shortly on side roads that have speed limits of no more than 30 mph. I want to start commuting to work, a 17 mile ride one way, but at a certain point I will have to get off the side roads of 30 mph and figure out how to get to the other side! What my concern is, is the speed. I'm not able to find to much info, but from what I understand, I can ride my bike on any road except an expressway that has a warning of "only motorized vehicles over so many CCs." So my question is, should I legally be able to ride on a busy 2 lane road/highway with a speed limit of 55 MPH? Even if I had a road bike, I'm no where near those speeds. My only other option to get around this road is to take more side roads, tack on more miles and more time and since I'm already devoting an hour and a half to get to work in the morning, I'm not sure I want to get up any earlier to take a longer route. Google maps for biking directions shows I should take these roads, but what are your guys' thoughts? I've never seen a bike on these roads in my life, not to say they haven't been there.
Thanks!!
