I just moved to Austin and have been riding for 6 months and am looking for some training partners... I am not in great shape (6'4" 200) and was an active couch potato for many years. I think if I was riding with someone I could push myself further. I have never rode with anyone and am looking forward to it....

Hey
Where are you in Austin?

I lived in Austin for many years and recommend the following places for cycling:
1. Shoal Creek Blvd - there is a dedicated bike path and is connected by a series on quiet roads amongst the homes (less traffic), great for a peaceful ride in the evenings2. Veloway (Off Mopac) - This is a great place for uninteruppted riding (no car traffic). The loop in ~3 mi and is relatively flat. Once you get experienced with this Mopac is close by to take some long rides.
Hope that helps and happy riding!!

I'd recommend the Austin Cycling Association - which does group rides for folks of all levels. You can pretty much pick any day that has a ride of a distance you feel comfortable with. Group riding REALLY makes a difference in keeping you going and also happens to be more efficient (drafting, etc). And, as another poster suggested, Shoal Creek from Anderson Lane all the way to 38th is a nice ride. I commute down that route to downtown. It's not great for paceline riding (group) due to cars parking in the bike lane but it's calm.

There is a guy named Lance whose last name is Armstrong. He lives in Austin, I am sure he is one heck of a training partner..😄 -
I'm a senior at UT and am conducting a survery about cycling in Austin for my Senior Thesis project. This is a 25 question survey that will take less than 10 minutes to complete and is entirely anonymous, no personal information will be collected. I need to get as many people to take this as possible so as to obrain a decent population sample so that I have good statistics to back up my claims on my paper. I would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to complete this survey. If you forward the survey to anyone else that you think may be interested in taking it, I would be very grateful.
Thank you. http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e2tr4rseg7fhz54d/start -
Some of the local bike shops have weekly rides that go at a conversational pace.
I believe Nelo's ride is on Thursday evenings, and Mellow Johnny's ride is on Saturday mornings. The rides leave at the respective shops.
