Hi, new to the forums and cycling in general and enjoying both. Haven't hooked up with a local club yet and don't really know anybody knowledgeable about the sport so maybe you guys/gals can help me out by giving me some ideas. Anyways, I bought a '08 Fuji Newest 1.0 @my LBS on closeout last year(stats here BikePedia - 2008 Fuji Newest 1.0 (USA) Complete Bicycle ). All stock except mine came with the 105 rear derailleur and I got an ultegra front derailleur cheap on ebay. Love the bike, but I've got a new job and a few disposable dollars and time so I've been thinking about upgrades. What would you do first? I've been thinking about buying an ultegra 6700 groupset for just under 700 or mavic cxp33 for under 300. Or maybe something else entirely? If I continue to love cycling as much as I have I think I might get a serious racer in a year or so(dreaming of a cervelo s2) but for now this is a fitness/commuter bike and needs functional and reliable more than light and aero. Thanks for your input!

Buy nothing. ride it as is until parts start failing off. The only difference between 105 and ultegra is weight save your money and when your ready to race buy a better bike or go straight to DA.

Once you have an entry level road bike, most of the improvement in your performance will come from your own fitness. For instance, a Cat 1 rider can probably smoke the Cat 5 field by using a Sora bike. Once you get into racing, you'll discover that you'll incur a lot more financial costs beyond the bike, like traveling expenses (gas, lodging, food), registration, and license fees.
The bike you have there is probably competent enough for Cat 5 racing. So save up your money and try a season's worth of racing first, and from there decide what you want in your next bike. I'd agree with jagonz here, don't buy upgrades, just wait until you get your next bike. I think you should keep your old bike once you do though, since it's nice to have a spare in case you need it.

Looks like you're a commuter. If that's true then cumfort an reliability are foremost...mudguards, rain gear, power locks 'n low maintenance etc.
Sportin cyclin is another thing even if you do it while communtin.
