  1. Hello everyone. Like I said, I'm a newbie here. I have been road riding for years though. I've got a little problem and was wondering if someone could help out with some tips. I need to get my legs bigger. That's the only thing that's slowing me down. I just don't have the power to sprint out in front of the pack. Any useful tips would be greatly appreciated. I know I've got to hit the gym to fix this problem, but would like to know which exercises are best to employ. Thanks.

  2. Leg size has nothing to do with it. Chris Hoy is the World's best track sprinter and has stated that his 66cm thighs are a disadvantage in terms of frontal area even if they pump out some decent power.

If you want to improve as a road sprint cyclist then do some intervals targetting your 20-30 second power in conjunction with a well balanced programme. No sense in developing an awesome sprint if you can't go the distance or get dropped on climbs or in corners through poor technique.

  3. Look at Contador. No need for size, actually size will slow you down.

  4. Look at Wiggins and Cancellara who both got smaller (lost 7 and 5 kg each) and Wiggins shocked everyone with 4th at the Tour and Cancellara with a powerhouse performances at Tour of Switzerland, TdF and World TT Champs.

Another thing to look at for crits and sprinting seeing the speeds are higher is how aero guys like Cav and Henderson are on the bike. I'm shocked that it has only been in recent years they have got sprinters in the wind tunnel seeing the resistance increase as your speed increases.

  5. Like the others said: don't concentrate on leg size, and I would add don't hit the gym.

Without knowing more about your training, the best thing to do is intervals focused on the areas you need to improve. I.e., if you want to improve your sprinting, do various sprint intervals.
