  1. Hi,
i recently purchased a raleigh equipe of eBay and am attempting to convert to a single speed. but ive come across a problem when trying to sort out the chainline.

The chainset just seems to be to far from the centre post of the bike. i think i might need a new bottom bracket but am not sure on the technical side of BB sizes.

Does anyone know what size bottom bracket fits with the raleigh equipe or a size which would take the chainset closer to the frame???

    Cheers.

AFAIK, every Raleigh made after 1977 uses an English threaded BB.

As far as adjusting your chainline, the common practice is to mount the chainring on the inner shoulder of the spider ...

Some people mount a "guard" on the outer shoulder, some don't.

appriectiate your help but i bought a stronglight 55 series chainset which doesnt have the option to change the chainring from shoulder to shoulder of the spider, mainly because there is a distinct lack of one.

    any other ideas though???

    thanks

I'm presuming that your Raleigh has a steel frame & dates to the 80s. Is that right?

How far off is the current chainline?

Is the frame's current rear spacing still 126mm OR is it something else?

Have you RE-dished the rear wheel?

The first attached picture is of a wheel I changed from 120mm to 126mm (it originally had a hollow axle & skewer ... the frame's original rear dropout spacing was 120mm) so that I could mount the chainring on the outer shoulder of a standard Shimano crank on a 113mm asymmetrical spindle (a different crank is shown in the second picture) ... the hub flanges are NOT perfectly centered ... the chainline was still off by about 1mm.

If I had left the frame & wheel spacing at 120mm AND centered the hub flanges AND mounted the chainring on the inner shoulder then the chainline would have been almost perfect.
