I am looking at getting a hitch mount bike rack. the yakima double down (holes bike by the top bar)I can pick up new for $150 (US) and the thule 990(platform the bike sits on and a frame "hook" drops down to hold in place along with wheel tie downs) I can pick up for $220 (US) also brand new. Which do you think is a better unit for transferring a bike?
The thing I like about the thule is that the front wheel doesn't move around, which if I go the yakima double down I know I can use a rope or strap to hold it in place.
I use roof racks (Thule, because that's what I bought 20 years ago), but I've worked at selling both brands.
What I like about all Thule hitch carriers is that they're adaptable to 1 1/4" and 2" receivers. What I like about this one is that you can carry odd-sized bikes more easily since you don't have to hang them from the top tube. Also, the lift-over is lower.
On the other hand, hanger-type carriers are mechanically simpler and they hold the bikes higher, an advantage if you intend to drive off-road with them on the back.
All Thule carriers are EU-safety-certified for on member nation highways.
