Alter pants into bibs?

Sure, anything can be done with the right seamstress or tailor. The problem with pants will be that there will be a residual waistband. I think one of the best things about bibs is the lack of a waistband. You could try some regular suspenders, not the farmer john kind, but something more sporting. Patagonia used to make a great set.

what about having them cut the waistband which release the pressure around the waist and just attach a "bib" to them??

That could work, especially if the suspenders are attached in a way that follows the form of bibs. Yeah, that could be done. If that were done with a flat seam, it'd be even better.

I think that would be the best way to do it. Also, you may want some velcro in addition to buttons on the side to keep wind out.

Back in the day of wool shorts and tights, suspender was all we had. We'd find a rugged elastic "sport" set. The more ambitious would sew buttons to the shorts, but clips worked fine. If the waistband was too tight we'd take out the elastic. The suspenders usually pulled it too high (like old man pants) to cause discomfort.

You know, the cool advantage of suspenders over bibs is you only need one set.

Go watch I think Le Course en Tete....Eddy using 'stays', suspenders. Standard kit back in the day. Get some.

I was rooting around in the closet last night and found my old suspenders.

They still have little "rust" marks on the straps from the buckles.
