  1. I am new to this. Should I wear the lycra? What is better bib's or the normal shorts? What do you wear when it is cold? thanks

I wear bibs. When it's cold what I wear depends on the temp. Sometimes I just wear a set of bib knickers (they come down to mid calf), and other times I wear leg warmers (uhm cycling leg warmers, not dance leg warmers) under my bibs. With those two I find I'm covered in all conditions in which I'd ride. Others need more warmth and turn to bib tights, which go down to your ankle.

I wear bibs, bib knickers as the temp goes down. Add a pair of bib tights as it gets colder. Poly type turtleneck, neck gaitor, LS jersey(wool is great), and Gore jacket when it's around 25 degrees. Booties, wool fingered gloves inside windstopper mittens. Wool beanie under the helmet. Balaclava when it really gets cold.

  4. Bibs are almost always better than normal shorts. Especially in the cold weather when you were multi layers and everything needs to stay up and not creep down as you ride.

In the cold weather you need a good pair of roubaix tights and once again the bib type sits a lot better and never falls down.

+1, I use only bib pants, knickers and shorts. when it gets cold out I throw on my thermal bib tights which make a HUGE difference as they keep my entire lower body warm. it is important to be warm when you ride so your muscles stay loose. I didn't dress properly one of the last times I rode and my legs tightened up. Have you ever had REALLY cold hands and tried to use them? same concept. my castelli shorts are 100% polyester and they work great. be sure to get some with a good pad sewn in.

  6. I really like endura bibs, I have had good luck with them and they seem to be very good quality. (stiching, padding, material)

Does ice climbing on a north facing wall (i.e., was always in shade) at -10° count? The wind had a bit of a bite to it. Things felt much better when the hands weren't warming up.
