Is it just me, or does starting a cycle from stop become dangerous when cycling in traffic? It isn't convenient to switch down to low gear every time I'm starting, and I swerve the front wheel every time I start from stop on high gear. Does this bother anyone else?

It should be worrisome to you. You should downshift into the desirable gear before you get to the stop, and you definitely should NOT swerve to the left. You need to get some practice starting and downshifting and stopping so that you can start from a stop sign or a light without swerving to the left.
