How's it going? I've been reading posts here for the past few months and am going to be needing an affordable bike for commuting to campus and back. I was thinking of getting a road bike and have been searching through bikesdirect.com as well as craigslist. I recently road my friend's road bike and have started thinking a hybrid might better suite me as I may have a few rides off the road. I recently have run across the Giant Cypress series and have some interest in these bikes. My question is how drastic of a difference is there between the Giant Cypress, Giant Cypress ST, and Giant Cypress DX. They all have about a hundred dollar difference between them with the ST being the cheapest and DX the most expensive. Attached is a Word Document that has the three of them compared in a table with full specs. I am curious to how big of a difference is there between the three of them. Any help is greatly appreciated!

While there is a difference between all three bikes, oversimplifying the differences, the difference between the CYPRESS and the CYPRESS ST is that the latter has a steel frame & fork. The former has an aluminum frame with a marginal suspension fork.
The steel version of the bike may weigh 2+ lbs. (~2 kg) more the one with an aluminum frame just because steel frames weigh more than most comparable aluminum frames ... but, the suspension fork (which is not suitable for MTB-type riding conditions) will add those two pounds back onto the total weight of the bike.
The over-simplified difference between the CYPRESS & the CYPRESS DX is the type of shifters -- the DX has better wheels & components ...
I recommend that you choose either the least expensive ST (steel) version (unless you are 6'3" or taller) OR the DX (as in, deluxe) if your budget will allow with the understanding that the suspension fork is marginal and may eventually seem like dead weight on most unpaved roads.
If I only had those three bikes to choose from then I would get the steel bike & save the money for OTHER possible upgrades in the future.

GIANT has a reputation for providing the best bike for your buck in most price ranges ... more so for their mid-range-and-high-end bikes.
In the price range you are looking at, the components will often be comparable on similarly priced bikes regardless of brand because there isn't too much room for a great deal of difference in price ...
While there may be better values, I can't suggest what they would be, so, find the shop you want to deal which will give you the best after-sale customer service ...
BTW. Because the frame specs & components are often very similar on a given style of bike, particularly in this price range, as trivial as it sounds, some people base their selection on the paint scheme ... and, THAT can be a valid, final determinant in how you choose one particular bike over another.
