    Last year, the pain threshold seemed to be right around $ 3.00.
    Per gallon of gasoline, that is.
    That's when I started to see a noticeable increase in the number of people riding bikes or using other forms of what counts as 'alternative' transportation in North America.
    Including people of the 'normal' looking or 'mainstream' variety, not just the usual suspects.

    This year, the pain threshold seems to be , somewhat surprisingly, lower.
    In this area, gas prices are currently hovering around $ 2.60/gal. and I'm noticing an increase in cyclists, inline skaters, skateboarders and, lo and will-you-look-at-that, even walkers.
    And, once again, not all of them are fitness fanatics, Lance Armstrong wanna-bes, Hippies (genuine leftovers or would-like-to-have-been new recruits), underprivileged kids and the borderline homeless (= 'The Usual Suspects"😉.

    Now, if they would only learn how to park their bikes in front of the few stores that actually have bike racks.......

    Is it perhaps possible that some of those who were driven to desperate measures by $3 a gallon gas merely enjoyed the increased fitness levels, increased $$$ in their pocketbooks, and such and chose to bike no matter the price of gas?

    We had several people where I work who started commuting last year as a way to save on gas. About half of them continued to ride after the price fell, but the others went back to driving.

    Things must be tougher gas wise in the states than here. I've not noticed an increase in bikes on the road. Maybe more kids on the footpaths,'parking' their bikes awkwardly outside the shops!

    We could make it even more painful for the other people. If gas goes to $5 a gallon and half the peole start riding bikes it will make it go higher. How many people live ten miles from work, but ride a car. I know in some cities like D.C. people live ten miles from work, but drive a car and it takes them 1.5 hours to get home. You could get home in 30 minutes by bike.

    Still, that's 50% of "several" who didn't bike before but are doing so now.

    Where I work, it's basically myself and one other guy. But others see us doing it and are intrigued.

    Every drop helps fill a bucket.
