During winter the only way for training is on an indoor trainer. I find this very boring and wondered if anyone knows of a computer program that will read pulses from a magnetic switch on the wheel logging the speed and converting the information to say a graphic picture of a rider. With pre-set info for the computer rider it would be possible to race against the computer. I know there are complete trainers for this but I can't justify the cost when I already have a trainer set up.

The best thing to do is ride outdoors. Riding trainers kills the soul and takes years off your lifespan.

I remember there use to be a computer game that connected to your bicycle on a trainer. it had buttons to turn left or right and it measured how fast you were going by a photocell across the pedal stroke. This kept the indoor riding interesting. This was quite a few years back (about 10 and it operated on a DOS system)

I too remember that type of program which is basically what I would like but alas DOS programs are getting a little out of date these days. I did see an excellent one running on a Commodore 64 where you selected your type of terrain, average speed and distance, and then rode against the computer. There were 2 riders, yourself and the computer. Admittedly there also was an input connection on the trainer to a magnetic load on the rear wheel roller so load was increased when going up hill and against a head wind and decreased when going downhill or hiding behind the computer rider. I'd be quite happy to sacrifice the automatic loading for just a program with a rider to compete against. I was hoping that the new WII games consule may have a bike rider program but haven't seen one as yet.

Hey, I've been racing now for 25 years, I'm nearly 70 and still race 50km every Sunday, I think it is a bit too late to be worrying about living longer. -
