there is a bicycling map of the area put out by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) that's usually
available at local bike shops and outdoor stores

There are so many good, and widely varied, rides in the area that it would help if you would provide
a more information about about what kind of ride you would like - how long with how much climbing?
From where in Oakland - riding from where you're staying or driving then riding? Driving how far?
Mountain or road?

Where you are accustomed to riding might give us a clue...

Good point!

My riding profile is Annual distance ~5k-6k miles Type Riding Road, Racing (Crits/RoadRaces),
Cyclocross, Terrain Illinois (a 200 ft climb is a big hill!)

What I would like to do in CA is some long rides (4 - 5 hours) in the mountains (will drive up to an
hour or so if I need to) some short rides (1 - 2hrs); could be flat or with climbing

This will all be done with a road bike.
