I've been following cycling for about 30 years and quite often have a read of this forum. However, it seems that a fair proportion of posters on here are obsessed with doping and Armstrong bashing which frustrates me. Now don't get me wrong - I'm well aware that cycling has a huge image problem which it has brought upon itself and I'm no great fan of Armstrong the man.

However, I genuinely believe that cycling right now is the cleanest it has ever been and that the cheats are being caught. Face it, there was no golden age of cycling as far as doping and ethics are concerned. From outright cheating in the early Tours through to cocaine etc. in the 30's and amphetamines post WW11 on to steroids and then EPO etc. Not to mention the buying and selling of races that was once a common occurrence. Cycling has always had a slightly seedy image a bit like boxing and the skullduggery was part of the appeal. I've hated seeing the way EPO and blood doping etc has almost ruined the sport I love and believe there should be life sentences for convicted dopers and stiff financial penalties as well. However, I'm not such a hard bitten cynic to believe that cycling is not changing nor am I naive enough to think that there aren't dopers still out there. Basically, I'm just sick of people with limited knowledgeof the sport taking potshots and tarring every pro cyclist with the same brush.

As for Armstrong, I think he's a liar and a hypocrite as a man but I respect his achievements as a bike rider. If that makes no sense let me explain. The vast majority of his Tour GC rivals have been convicted or connected with doping and if Armstrong beat them, doped or not, it's because he was better than them. However, unlike Coppi or Anquetil, he will never admit it because it will destroy his myth and ruin him. Yet, nobody suggests that Coppi or Anquetil should be branded as frauds or erased from the record books. Even Merckx was thrown off a Giro ala Pantani yet is still revered as a God. Where does it stop? Do you rewrite the history of the sport or do you accept it warts and all and hope like hell that real and lasting change is being made? I choose the latter.

Anyway, that's my rant/comments over. Opinions/criticisms welcome.

Merckx was not throw out Giro ala Pantani, it's seemed more than a conspiracy than a real doping case. When Merckx requested his sample to be more one times analyzed, it was not possible because the uniq sample had disappeared like many other things...
Of course, I have few doubt about what could have used Eddy but like many people I think he would have been one of the greatest riders with or without PED unlike Armstrong.

I agree with you re Merckx and he is my hero as far as cyclists go for both his record and for his humbleness for someone so revered by most cycling fans. What I meant by ala Pantani was that they were both ejected from the race within days of winning it due to a drugs scandal although obviously the actual circumstances surrounding each case was different. And even though when asked about doping Eddy was quoted as saying that "you don't ride the tour on a cheese sandwich" he was never really tarnished by the doping brush. As far as Armstrong goes, he was working with Ferrari pre cancer and if we accept the allegations made in From Lance to Landis, most likely doping then as well. So for him to win the Tour did he just discover better dope or did he improve also due to a changed physique, better training and an all-consuming commitment to winning the Tour? I'm just saying that if he continued doping post 96 that alone wouldn't have changed him from the pre cancer rider he was to the Tour winner he became and that other factors had to have come into play. And don't tell me he only won because he doped and his main rivals didn't because we know that's a crock.

Was he? Or was he just paying bigger bribes to the UCI than the others? A rider like Hamilton certainly could not afford a five hundred thousand dollar payment.

I noticed Steve, the administrator, was on yesterday. As usual he did not do jack [censored]. I think he periodically checks in to admire his destruction of the site and maybe to get new ideas for further damage.

It is clear that Flyer, AKA Tom Morris of Orinda, California, formerly of teams Eastside/MFG, Spine, and Sierra, license #25151, has some serious mental problems. The scary thing is that he is over fifty years old and a CPA. Can you imagine letting someone as unbalanced as Morris handle your money? Rumors are that he was doping on teams Spine and Sierra but still failed to win anything important, and that is what sent him over the edge. I fear for his wife Cristina; a crazy man like Morris probably beats her.
